A welcome return to the studio for Najma Akhtar, in collaboration with American guitarist Gary Lucas. Her background in Southeast Asian music makes an intriguing fit with Lucas’ determinedly American roots in blues and ‘art’ music. Despite the fact that his current band Fast’n’Bulbous celebrates the work of his former employer Captain Beefheart, this is a fairly straight-forward collection which mixes ghazal with chunky acoustic chords, a little percussion and sonic backdrops of treated guitar. Some splendid vocals top it off nicely.
