Kicking off with the Shadows pastiche of ‘Johnny Guitar’, the oudistas move swiftly along with some slinky expositions of their skills, and are joined on vocals by Mauritanian singer Malouma. Some interesting arrangements, including additional saxes and flute, sit comfortably with the overall concept. The preponderance of programmed percussion can sometimes prevent perfect pleasure, but such eccentricities as the heavy metal oud-treatment on ‘Genjiskan’ more than make up for it.
