Om Kalthoum was hardly one to take the world frivolously, and Ghalia Benali does justice to her vision. Dramatic versions of five Kalthoum classics performed by a trio of oud, double bass and percussion rather than the megalithic orchestras featured on the original arrangements, and all the more intimate for it.
